Bio-Solutions is dedicated to treating contaminated water, specializing in the tourism industry. For 5 years we have been steadily basing our growth on successful experiences in hotels and restaurants, as well as some industries and animal husbandry operations throughout Costa Rica. Bio-Solutions, whose formal name is Biological Solutions of the Caribbean, has its origins in the Southern Caribbean humid tropical region of the country, where we began in the mid-1990’s harvesting and experimenting with wild microbes in agriculture. When we invented a powerful mixture, very specific to decomposition, which is also resistant to large amounts of chemicals, we began to apply it!
Our microorganisms still come from their original source and the mixture is now shipped to the factory in Cartago where it is converted into stabilized solids and liquids, packaged and applied by both our technicians and a growing body of distributors, maintenance people and diverse clientele.
What Happens When We Have Water Quality Problems?
Our health and the hygienic conditions we live in have much to do with water quality. Water flows through our living environment, we drink it, use it for cleaning, transporting and storage of waste, and it always flows on more polluted than how it arrived. When we all produce water full of detergents and waste products, foul odors and diseases circulate on streets, in rivers, and eventually reach the oceans. The results of water pollution are the diseases we and our families suffer from, as well as pets and domestic animals and even plants growing around us. If we treat our waste water, it is usually expensive, depending on treatment plants, filters, tanks, channels, and rooter trucks for septic tanks.

How Do Biological Solutions Work? 
For houses, buildings, factories, farms and their environs there are tried, tested and inexpensive alternatives. Solutions based on biological processes are usually simple and their great potential lies in the fact that they form a part of nature’s all-encompassing chain of actions and reactions. The microorganisms in our products are of 100% wild origin, from the humid tropics, and are a synergistic and diversified mixture that functions in the kind of complex sequences that characterize natural processes. Accelerated biodegradation is an economical strategy because it increases the potential of existing infrastructure to deal with solids and pollutants.
Microorganisms have been humanity’s allies for thousands of years: yeast for bread and beer, lactobacillus for yogurt… even oil spills can be cleaned with microorganisms that digest heavy metals. When we select and activate certain microorganisms to purify the waters at a determined point, there is a benefit to the larger area around us through which our waters flow.
What does a biological treatment consist of?
- A large “shock” dose of microorganisms applied to the sources and reaches of contaminated and smelly areas
- Follow-up smaller and periodic doses that reinforce the populations established at the beginning of the treatment.

Why should biological treatment be a service and not just products?
Because of the different quantities of waste produced, the size of tanks and drainage infrastructure, and the microbial populations existing in each place and case, the dose and time it needs to work in each case varies. Bio-Solutions technicians visit to apply their experience and training so that problems can be resolved as quickly and cost effectively as possible. The first visit produces:
- An estimation of quantity, cost and which combination of materials will be needed
- Recommendations for maximizing the effectiveness of the treatment
- Training of on-site maintenance personnel in use of the products
- A treatment plan managed by the client
Eventually, the microorganisms applied will establish themselves and it will only be necessary to periodically reinforce their populations with usually smaller doses. As soon as biological products have proven themselves to the people who use them, their ongoing, preventive dose becomes part of a “culture” of maintenance. From this point on our clients wield a powerful tool and become the experts on its use at the site, often finding new uses and observing more extensive effects than first envisioned.
